Red Cross Can Help You Be Prepared
For The Next Emergency
Take A Class, Download First Aid App To Help Save a Life
FINDLAY, OH, APRIL 18, 2013 — Recent events in Boston and Texas emphasize the importance of knowing what to do when an emergency occurs. Evan as first responders rushed into help at both scenes, much of the initial care to the injured was provided by friends, neighbors and bystanders who were trained in CPR and first aid. Whether the emergency is community-wide and involves numerous injuries, or involves a single individual being hurt at home, it is vital that someone close by knows what to do when such an emergency occurs.

“Getting yourself and your family more prepared for disasters can bring peace of mind during trying times and can help save someone’s life during future emergencies,” said Todd James, Executive Director, American Red Cross of Hancock, Seneca and Wyandot counties. “Taking an action like downloading our first aid, taking a first aid class or building a disaster supply kit can help people feel empowered to act when disaster strikes.”

The American Red Cross has numerous ways people can get the information and training they need to be able to help when an emergency occurs and urges everyone to be better prepared by taking advantage of training and mobile apps available to teach them what to do when someone needs assistance.

FIRST AID/CPR CLASSES The Red Cross has classes available that emphasize hands-on-learning of First Aid, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). The courses teach someone the skills they need to help save a life. Participants learn how to respond to common first aid emergencies, how to respond to cardiac and breathing emergencies in adults and how to use AEDs. There are also options available to learn how to help infants and children. People can register for these classes at redcross.org/takeaclass or by calling 1-800-REDCROSS.

ONLINE TRAINING Family and household members can learn how to prevent and respond to emergencies by taking the new Red Cross Family First Aid and CPR online course. The cost is $30. Family First Aid and CPR teaches you how to:
• Identify signals of medical emergencies.
• Give appropriate care for common first aid emergencies.
• Know when to call 9-1-1 and what to do until help arrives for critical cardiac and first aid emergencies.

This course is for people who do not require OSHA-compliant certification. It takes about 2 hours to go through the Adult CPR and First Aid content. Pediatric modules are also available.

DOWNLOAD FIRST AID APP People can also download the free Red Cross First Aid App for iPhone and Android mobile devices which puts simple lifesaving information at someone’s fingertips. Features include step-by-step instructions to guide someone through everyday first aid scenarios, full integration with 9-1-1 to call emergency services from the app and preloaded content to have instant access to information even without device reception or internet connectivity. The app is available in the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store by searching for American Red Cross.

Kewpee Hamburgers is a chain of fast-food restaurants founded in 1923 in Flint, Michigan, by Samuel V. Blair under the name "Kewpee Hotel" in a stand.

In Lansing, Michigan, the Weston family has owned and operated the Kewpee's restaurant since it opened in 1923. The Weston family has had as many as two Kewpee restaurants open at one time in Lansing. The Westons are in their fourth generation of operating Kewpee. Kewpee's early plans under Blair and Adams seemed to stay out of major city. After Prohibition, some Kewpee restaurants added real beer to its staple of root beer, which was on many Kewpee menus joining the standard coffee of other hamburger chains. In 1928, the Lima, Ohio, location opens under the ownership of Hoyt “Stub” Wilson. About 200 Kewpee locations existed by 1929. In 1936, with a Kewpee already located in Findlay, Ohio, Wilson opened a restaurant there called Wilson's Sandwich Shop. At its peak just before World War II, there were more than 400 Kewpee restaurants in operation.

Blair, upon his retirement on April 1, 1944, started renting the original location. Blair died in 1945 and licenses continued to lease the location and paid royalties for use of the Kewpee name from the estate until the Kewpee trademark went up for sale in 1955 and Blair estate owned locations went up for sale in 1958. The original location and the rights to the Kewpee were split up in sale with the original location going to leaser William "Bill" V. Thomas while the trademark went to Ed F. Adams's Kewpee Hotels partnership of Toledo, Ohio. About 1958, Harrison "Harry" E. Shutt goes to work for Wilson at his Lima restaurant. In 1963, the Grand Rapids licensee locations are sold and separated from Kewpee as Mr. Fables.

Ed Adams' partnership, Kewpee Hotels transferred the Kewpee trademark to Kewpee Hotel Systems, Inc. in 1965 of which Ed Adams was president. The number of Kewpee locations dropped considerably in 1967 when the Kewpee Hotel Systems, Inc. demanded a full franchising arrangement and a percentage of the profits. The locations which objected either closed or changed their names. The original Flint location changed its name to Bill Thomas' Halo Burger which is still a thriving business, but not at the original location which was torn down in 1979. Hortense M. Adams took over as president of Kewpee Hotel System, Inc. by March 1975. In August 1985, a Kewpee International partnership,(later most likely incorporated as Kewpee of Toledo) led by former Kewpee Hotel System Vice President Robert L. Dane, purchased the Kewpee rights from Kewpee Hotel System, Inc. The Kewpee, Inc. forms in 1969 by Harold J., James F. and Richard E. Meredith based in Lima, Ohio. "The Kewpee, Inc. of Toledo" assigns the trademark of Kewpee to "The Kewpee, Inc." Shutt becomes president in 1970 of Kewpee, Inc. and purchase's Wilson's Lima location upon Wilson's death in 1980.

According to a 2001 interview with Dave Thomas, the founder of Wendy's, as a child, he lived near the intersection of Douglas and Kalamazoo Avenue in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Thomas used to love eating at a Kewpee restaurant, which stood at Burdick and South. He said it was what inspired him to go into the business. Kewpee's sold square hamburgers and thick malt shakes, much like that famous restaurant that Thomas eventually founded in Columbus, Ohio, in 1969.

In January 2010, Kewpee was named to the National Restaurant News 50: All-American Icons list, and the Lima City Council honors Kewpee with a resolution recognizing this honor.

How Does Crime Stoppers Work?

There are three essential elements:

The Media:

Crime Stoppers methods, objectives, and phone numbers are publicized on a regular basis by the media. An unsolved crime is given special treatment with details published in newspapers and aired on radio/television.

The Community:

Citizens are responsible for forming a Crime Stoppers non-profit corporation, whose Directors establish policy, determine amount and method of reward payments, work closely with the media and police, and oversee the program. The Directors are responsible for fund raising and all volunteer services. No tax money is sought.

The Police:

A special Crime Stoppers phone with a well-publicized number is manned by detectives. The callers are given a special code number and do not give their names. If, after investigation the information leads to an arrest, the caller is entitled to a reward of up to $1,000.

History Crime Stoppers of Findlay/Hancock County, Inc.:

In Findlay, a local businesswoman, Jane Burson, is credited with getting the program off the ground. In 1987, Burson volunteered to serve on the Chamber of Commerce’s Crime and Vandalism Committee. During one of the group’s meetings she suggested that Findlay explore the Crime Stopper program which she heard about in Toledo.

Burson arranged for Helen Hawley, the president of Toledo Crime Stoppers and a personal friend, to come to Findlay and discuss the program with the committee.

Eventually Findlay Police Chief David Clark (now retired) and former Hancock County Sheriff, Byron Boutwell became involved and a decision was made to start a Crime Stopper program in Findlay.

Startup money was provided from an L. Dale Dorney Foundation grant with matching funds raised by business and private individuals.

The first call to Crime Stoppers – in November 1987 – led to the arrest of a man in connection with an armed robbery of a Findlay carryout. The man was located in Yuma, Arizona, and returned to Ohio. He was sentenced to prison in early 1988 after being convicted of robbery and felonious assault.

The largest Crime Stopper reward, $1,000, was paid out in 1989 when a rural Findlay man located the body of a baby who had been killed and thrown into Eagle Creek.

Crime Stoppers of Findlay/Hancock County, Inc., is governed by a board of directors made up of local law enforcement and fire officials along with a number of private citizens. The board of directors meets monthly to evaluate the program, promote the program and decide on the amounts of rewards to be paid.
The post Get your detective hat on….YOU might be able to solve local crimes! appeared first on SocialFindlay.Com.

Alltel Wireless will be handing out free cellphones to low-income residents Monday and Tuesday in The Courier's parking lot at the corner of W. Hardin St. and Western Ave.

The event, part of the federal Lifeline Prepaid Wireless program, will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on both days.

To receive a phone, a person must provide proof of government assistance and a driver's license.

If a person is eligible, he or she will receive a free phone and the first month of service will be free. After the first month, the cost is $10 per month plus tax.

Proof of government assistance can include:
• Federal Public Housing HUD/Section 8.
• General assistance.
• Income at or below 150 percent of federal poverty guidelines.
• Low-income Home Energy Assistance Program.
• Medicaid (not Medicare).
• National School Lunch Program's free lunch program.
• Social Security disability insurance.
• Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.
• Supplemental Security Income.
• Temporary Assistance for Needy Families.

Phone recipients will get 500 minutes, 500 text messages, and unlimited mobile-to-mobile minutes to any other Alltel customer.

Payment for future monthly service fees can be made at any Alltel store, or anywhere that sells Alltel $10 prepaid cards.

The Lifeline program has provided a discount on phone service for low-income individuals since 1985. Starting in 2005, Lifeline discounts were made available to low-income individuals on pre-paid wireless service plans in addition to land line service.

Other wireless companies also participate in the Lifeline program.
